AF Lava Soil is a natural substrate based on volcanic lava, which is enriched with essential minerals for plant growth. When used, it slowly releases the substances contained within it, feeding the plants. The substrate is pre-rinsed, but aquarium water may become cloudy for up to 12 hours after the product is added. This is natural and does not cause any side effects. After approximately 12 hours has passed, the turbidity should subside. Because Lava Soil is rich in minerals, we recommend that you carefully dispense other fertilizers for the first six months after being added. This will help to control an over accumulation of Micronutrients.
HOW TO USE:

Sprinkle a 7 cm layer of AF Lava Soil over the tank base. Cover the substrate with water, and plant. Once planted, fill the aquarium to the top with water.

Directions should mention how much is needed for a variety of tanks Feb 22, 2019
I'm new to the hobby and have yet to fully utilize this substrate so my review is limited.

The Aquaforest Natural Substrate directions include info to provide some idea of how much is needed in your tank size. The directions for this Aquaforest Lava Soil does not include such info.

I have a 20g long tank with 0.75" wide polished gravel around the sides so no nutrient substrate can be seen from the side. The gravel is held up by a temporary wood frame I made. I put this Lava Soil inside the frame and once leveled I only had 1" high substrate. So from glass to glass the height of the substrate would have been even less. Directions say a 7cm (2.75") layer is required so three of these 5L buckets would be needed for a 20g long or 29g tank.

Wanting to try the Aquaforest Natural Substrate as well, I decided to order the 10L bucket. Planning to lay down the Natural Substrate first and use the Lava Soil as a cap, I easily collected the Lava Soil from the tank.
