Clarisea
Aquarium Filter Roller
The ClariSea fleece filter is a high efficiency water filtration system which effectively removes suspended particles such as micro algae, detritus, food, organic waste and gravel dust from the water column. Suitable for use in marine aquariums, freshwater aquariums, fish-breeding systems and propagation systems for corals. One roll of filter fleece included with each model.

BRILLIANTLY CLEAR WATER
A ClariSea filter will completely replace the need for high maintenance filter socks and result in brilliantly clear water in your aquarium.

LIGHT PENETRATION
The use of a ClariSea fleece filter will ensure the highest possible filtration efficiency for optimal light penetration and growth of your corals and plants.

REDUCED ACCUMULATION OF ORGANIC WASTE
Continuously removes detritus & organic waste from the water column preventing breakdown to nitrate & phosphate in your aquarium.

REDUCED LOAD ON PROTEIN SKIMMER
The ClariSea fleece filter dramatically reduces the load on your protein skimmer by removing even the smallest of particles.

REDUCED MAINTENANCE
Constant filtration results in reduced maintenance of pumps, wave makers and protein skimmers, plus... no more socks to clean.

NO MORE DETRITUS
A ClariSea fleece filter will noticeably reduce the accumulation of detritus in your aquarium substrate and sump.

Important note: Only use the 20mm bolt to attach the motor to the Clarisea as per our Quick start guide below, do not use the 30mm bolt , this is for the clean fleece. Using the 30mm long bolt to attach the motor will result in damage to the motor assembly.
Cost Savings

Think how often you need to change your filter socks!

Do you wash them or change them, if so what is your time worth every 3-4 days?

Incredible but true, compare the cost of both options to yourself and you will realise why the ClariSea Fleece Filter is so popular.

It is not really correct to state a micron size for this type of filter material as it can lead to confusion.

Like all fleece filters of this type, including bag filters, the size of the particle removed by the media will continuously reduce as the fleece dirties.

Example; with a 200 micron filter sock, the largest particle that should pass through when new is 200 microns, however as the media starts to collect dirt, the holes get blocked creating smaller and smaller passages and so the bag collects out smaller and smaller particles. It continues to do this until the head pressure can no longer force water through the small holes and it overflows.

The ClariSea works in exactly the same way except that instead of overflowing and having to change or clean the bag, it automatically rolls on to expose a fresh piece of material. The fresh fleece will allow larger particles to pass through and the dirtier material will stop smaller particles.

The higher the flow rate through the fleece, the less time the roll will last.

Imagine it as a large group of people trying to leave a building through one door. The slower and more organised they try to leave, the easier it is for individuals to bunch together and to fill into small gaps in the crowd, like water and small particles finding their way through small holes in the fleece.

Compare this with people trying to leave quickly in a panic, and chaos is created, so that people back up around the door, like the water level backing up and triggering the float to move on the roll in the ClariSea without it becoming fully saturated with dirt.

ClariSea Installation Height vs Filter Life
The pressure to force such a large flow rate of water through such a fine fleece is created by the head height of the water in the ClariSea unit above the water level in the sump.

The higher this difference is between the two levels, the higher the head pressure, and the easier it is to force the same amount of water through smaller and smaller holes created as the fleece blocks.  The perfect height would therefore be with the opening to the silencing plates being about 1-2 cm (1/2-1") below the water surface. (On the tests for the 'flow vs filter life' chart, the bottom of the ClariSea was submerged 11cm below the surface).

The deeper the Clarisea sits in the water, the less head pressure exists to force water through the fleece and therefore the shorter the life of the roll.

Factors affecting the life of the fleece are:

1 - Water flow (volume)

2 - Filter installation height above the water.

3 - Dirty tank.

With most aquariums you will find that they act as large settlement chambers and that particles of food, detritus and dead bacteria settle within the sand or substrate. The clarisea will remove this detritus from the water before it gets a chance to settle but will also remove sediments from the substrate as it is stirred up by fish or manually.

The rolls in the early days may last for a shorter length of time and should be seen to last longer and longer as the tank is cleaned.

4 - Greedy fish

Tanks with high stocking loads of hungry fish will dirty the roll faster but keep your aquarium sparklingly clean whilst removing uneaten food before it breaks down.

5 - Excessive Carbon Dosing

Carbon dosing works by growing bacteria in the water column that are then exported out of the system by skimming or filtration. Excessive carbon dosing can result in bacterial blooms which are seen as a slight cloudiness of the water. The ClariSea fleece is fine enough to remove these bacteria from the water but when in high volumes will blind the fleece and reduce it's life. If you notice this then we suggest slowly reducing the amount of carbon source added. Equally the installation of the ClariSea after a Nitrate Filter will also reduce the life and give a pale coloured roll from the white bacteria.

Great for what it is. Aug 15, 2018
Overall it's great, these are my observations thus far.

- Fits a relatively small space which was important to me.
- Seems to be handling quite a high flow rate. I have high turnover on my 300 originally with two 1" pipes running wide open with as much flow as possible (herbie/bean/etc), a third pipe at 5%, and this is taking on 90% of one. On a normal height stand (shorter) with slightly less water pressure (from height) it would handle 1 x 1" at full speed I'd bet.
- Will see how long the filter lasts as more flow obviously reduces longevity. Others reported months of use. It is filtering out quite a bit so if it doesn't last long its because it was needed.
- Adds about as much noise or slightly more as I've heard in many filter sock applications with my level of flow, less flow wouldn't even be talked about. I see a couple easy tweaks that should reduce this. Since this comes fully disassembled it's easy to modify all you want, not that it needs it.
- Currently creates a fair bit of bubbles out the bottom but these are not micro bubbles so it's a non event.
- The hanging brackets work well for multiple setups but you'd likely stand it in the sump on something or use your own if space is tight.
- The fitting was an imperial 1" not metric.
- Built quality is sold once completed as there are a lot of interconnected pieces... adult Lego set.
- The adjustable angle available for mounting the roll already helped.
- The motor feels very solid and given the limited time it's actually running I can't imagine it wearing out.
- If you have a tight space like me you'll want to pay close attention to when the paper is running out to avoid refeeding it. Just attach to the end of the old role. It's used very slowly so you should have days to notice.
- Smell, I don't notice it. Really is a non event.
- Not Apex/controller ready but a quick snip of the wire and a breakout box would fix this. Since the wires have disconnects built in I may find a way to buy a replacement to destroy. Then do the coding which is basic.

Again, overall I'm quite happy and the volume of water it can handle was critical to me. The small footprint was also critical.
Worst Reefing Equipment Purchase Dec 16, 2021
Although I do appreciate D-D's troubleshooting assistance, as repetitive as it was, it ultimately proved useless… nothing but a waste of time.

I purchased this product with high hopes, even permanently modifying my brand new sump by removing the filter sock holders. What a mistake!

Unfortunately, this has been one of my worst reef equipment purchases. A lemon from the beginning. I am now on my 7th fleece roll and have not made it through a single roll without an issue requiring removing the roll at 50%-75%. What a pain! Filter socks are much less of a hassle and cheaper too!

It appears, at least on the forums, that many are experiencing the same issues that I am, a motor that will not advance the fleece after 50%-75% of the way through the roll. Mostly likely a design issue (undersized motor or power supply).

This unit is going in the trash.
